Embedding Multimedia

So I just found a way to embed video/audio/gaget into blogger from anywhere.

Now there is some limitation unless you know how to code HTML but a lot of of different websites and software make it easy for you. The reason being they want you to share their product with others who might use it as well and bring them to the original website so they can either sell you stuff or show you advertisements.

So the file that you want to embed needs to be hosted on the internet somewhere, and there are many places where you can upload files for the purpose of embedding like YouTube, sound-cloud, and even Google drive can host video files that you can share. Just find the one that works best for you.

As a note on the sharing ability of online software, there can be a risk that the students can be exposed to areas that are not desirable. YouTube is especially guilty of linking videos at the end of the clip so maybe trialing the embedded file and following any links it shows in order to find where it might go.

but lets go to the how now

Embedding files

In simple terms all you are doing when you embed a file is adding the code of the original to your site.

where you place this code is in the HTML

The code comes from the original file. They usually have a option to share, embed or make a gadget (It may take a bit of searching to find the right one but don't give up). These are all the same thing so don't worry about the jargon.

Copy the "code" which should be a line of text next to the embed, gadget tag. It should look something like this:
(Make sure you copy the whole code or it won't work.)

Then paste the the file into the HTML of your site

Which will look like this:
Those find the spot where you want to put your embedded file and press enter (Make sure you don't make a space in the middle of a line of code. Using the arrows at start of each line is a good way place to make a space between)

Paste the line of code you got from the original file and when you get back to Compose, "presto"

(One extra note you should be able to do the same with Wiki and websites as well. They may have more straight forward ways of embedding that means you don't need to fiddle with code. Just have a look around and you can even Google what you want to do and there should helpful info out there)

Keep Trying things out and maybe you will find other ways of doing amazing things.

    1. Oliver!

I just wanted to say that this posting is WONDERFUL!

Through practical trial and error you have shown the limitations and workarounds of incorporating sound in a blog environment.

I thought I would share my attempt of adding sound via Spotify...FAIL! Do you have experience with that application?

Please keep in mind though that I did accidently download 3 other software programs before hitting the jackpot with MobaPhoto. I also managed to subscribe to a text message stream costing $5 per message...the dangers of giving students free rein on the internet I guess.

    2. Hey Susan.

I might have found your problem. If you put the embed code into the HTML and it came up, the only way it would play is if you have spotify installed on your computer. Bit inconvenient I know but jeep trying other things.

Oh and yes the internet can bite you of the behind but just remember don't give your real details if you don't trust the source and definitly don't hand out your creditcard details

  3. Who is that guy at the front of the classroom with the blue shirt?
    He keeps stalking me!
Great post Oliver. I can't wait to have a debrief of your school visit experiences. It is an opportunity to see what is happening with ICT but more importantly to ask why?
As you develop your own beliefs about the role of ICT in your pedagogy you can refine the "how" part of your teaching.
    Well done.
