so here is a story I wanted to tell.
Who Am I
.
A wiki could be a great tool to tell a story as a group; adding scenarios, information, images that enhances the groups ability to expand a story. The only down side is that could get very messy with everybody telling their own story and going off in many tangents. (but a good idea to try to look at multiple journeys)
a website while could be great as a story telling tool in a final concept stage with it's ability to take the audience down a story arch with links and pages that can only be accessed in specific orders, doesn't have the room for much feedback.
I realised that a blog is a great tool for sharing and exploring each individuals stories in a way that can grow as others respond to it
You can create an universe told through the blog be it letter correspondence in a historical or fantasy piece, the logs of a Starship Captain, or like I've done a person locked in a room who doesn't know who they are.
The great thing about it is the ability for the students to have control on the material and also have feedback for it, and the feedback could also be a continuation or adding to the story itself. There might be those who want to be hurtful but they their comments can be deleted.
The wide variety of content that can be added could also enhance the exercise with the inclusion of images audio and video for extra stimulus.
If anybody else can think of other ways stories could be told or if you think there might be anything that could be a threat to the students in this form please comment.
and if you want to add to the story got to the link
Fantastic idea Oliver.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to show you a movie that I made with my year 6/7 class on North Keppel Island Environmental Education Centre as part of an experiment with the drama curriculum.
I had never attempted to make a fiction movie like this before and it ended up being a learning curve for all.
The use of a wiki would have been fantastic to allow the students to develop their character.
I must admit my students had almost no drama experience and looked at drama as poison.
This was because the school avoided drama in the curriculum.
My challenge was to make something happen that would allow me to assess their learning and bring the fun and excitement of drama to life.
We wrote the movie script together and I did control it closely because I was inexperienced.
It was more like one of those episodes from the TV series LOST.
The story was about agroup of survivors that come ashore on an island and have a series of adventures while trying to escape.
They meet sand people, dead bodies, a lunatic, mud people etc.
I also wanted to demonstrate to the environmental education centre staff that visiting school groups could make movies as part of their curriculum while staying at the centre.
Hi Oliver,
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of a blogs and wikis as tools for students to develop their stories. It is collaborative, encourages structure and stores everyone's work in one place.
Do you know much about the new HTML5 video API? It basically means that video will be supported across all browsers, making them more accessible. The prediction is that web video is about to get much more popular. Maybe you and your class could develop a website that hosts a short film festival? I guess there would be ethical and privacy considerations though...
On a wackier note, Animated GIFs!!! They're easy to make and smaller files than video. They'd be a great way for students to study movement and expression. Take this site for example, http://gifctrl.com/mi The movement of the gifs respond to the cursor. Anybody can upload one. It would be kinda cool if a group of students uploaded one after the other in order to build up a narrative :)
I don't really know too much about code but the HTML5 stuff sounds amazing. Having the abiliy to share any format is what I want from future technology. If only Apple would get off it's Tech high horse.
DeleteI Loved the GIF site. I'll see if i can make some for myself and then see if i can upload some.
Cool. Glad you liked the GIF site. They can be a bit basic but to me, that's their appeal :)
